Yesterday evening, Arsenal F.C faced off against Swiss Side, F.C Zurich in their first match of the 22/23 Europa League. The boys started off the match with an aura of excitement and magnificent energy which saw them pull in front with just 16 minutes on the clock, Marquinhos scoring on his debut.
Fabio Vieria showed his magnificent skills as his long pass swiftly found Eddie Nketiah who raced in front past the Zurich players before passing the ball to Marquinhos who with his first touch of the ball sent it flying past Brecher, the Zurich goalkeeper.
However, Zurich were able to get back to level terms as Mirlind Kryeziu found the goal from the penalty spot after Eddie Nketiah made a foul on Aliti in the penalty box right before half-time.
Before the beginning of the second half, the boyz and Zurich players stood in silence and ovation as they paid respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II who sadly passed away last evening. The boyz went ahead to pull ahead thanks to a beautiful Marquinhos flick over to Eddie Nketiah who headed it past the Zurich goalkeeper to score the winner.
As a result of this, Arsenal are on top of their Europa League group with 3 Points as PSV Eindhoven and Bodo/Glimt fought to a draw in their match. It is vital for Arsenal to remain on top of the group as this will automatically move them to the Round of 16 after the group stages have concluded. Unlike in other previous seasons where the number 1 and 2 teams automatically proceed to the round of 16, this time around, only the no.1 team in a group automatically proceeds. The no.2 and 3 teams in each group will play a play-off match between them to decide who moves on to the R.O.16.
The unfortunate passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II also has precursions for Arsenal and all other sports teams in England as all matches have to be halted during the mandatory 10-day period of mourning. I truly hope that Her Majesty will rest in eternal peace for the services she has done to all of humanity during her 70-year reign.
